OWNING
THE ROAD RULES
Sane
biking in a car-crazy world
By Julye Hannus -
May/June 2007 - Utne
Reader
There
are so many reasons to ride a
bike, the roads should be swarming
with cyclists enjoying cheap,
sustainable, healthy transportation.
There's just that one hitch:
Riding in traffic is intimidating. "In
[the United States] it seems
cycling anywhere except in parks
is dangerous," observes
the Vancouver-based Momentum
magazine (Feb./March 2007), which
also notes that compared to Canada,
England, and a slew of European
countries, the United States
spends the least per capita on
cycling infrastructure. And has
the highest rate of injuries
to riders.

TRANSIT
EXPERT: CAST OUT AUTOS
Cutting
traffic brings happiness,
former Bogota mayor tells
gathering
By Eric N.
Nelson - May 31, 2007 - Inside
Bay Area
OAKLAND — With
the fervor of a preacher inciting
his fallen flock to turn away
from their addictions, Enrique
Penalosa told a crowd of adoring
alternative transportation advocates
Wednesday at Oakland City Hall
that shunning their cars and
SUVs could bring happiness to
East Bay cities.
Continuing
to cater to our dependence by
building more highways and allowing
cheap and easy parking would
lead to more traffic, more misery
and cities that few people would
want to live, work or play in,
said Penalosa, who served three
years as mayor of Bogota, Colombia,
and now proselytizes for the
way of the foot, bike and wheelchair.

BICYCLE
FILM FESTIVAL 2007
The
Bicycle Film Festival celebrates
the bicycle. We are into all
styles of bikes and biking. If
you can name it-Tall Bike Jousting,
Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats,
Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Cycling
to Recumbents- we've probably
either ridden or screened it.
What better way to celebrate
these lifestyles than through
art, film, music and performance?

CARS
AND BICYCLES SHOULDN'T COMPETE
By
Gordon Dillow -OC
Register
I
was driving along an open stretch
of Pacific Coast Highway the
other day, at or just under the
posted speed limit of 50 mph,
and every hundred yards or so
I was passing groups of two or
three or a dozen bicyclists pedaling
along in the bike lane. And that's
when it occurred to me:
I
don't want to share the road.
More specifically, I don't want
to share a high-speed road with
bicycle riders – not because
it's that big of a problem for
me, but because it's too dangerous
for them.
