EDGEFEST
2007
EdgeFest
produces the Edge of the World Theater
Festival, an annual showcase for
the work of Los Angeles-based theater
artists and the Los Angeles History
Project and the Los Angeles Future
Project, which commission new works
about Los Angeles history and for
young audiences, respectively. This 12
hour festival will present works
in all stages of development from
7 minutes to an hour, presented on
3 stages, with some of LA’s
hottest DJ’s spinning music
including Rani De Leon; Camille Brown;
and DJs from LA’s notorious
Dublab. The evening will be presented
at one of downtown LA’s grittiest—yet
glamorous—venues, the Regent
Theatre which used to be an adult
movie theatre. Since 1999, The Edge of
the World Theater Festival has been
a grassroots celebration of Los Angeles
theater artists. Its mission is "to
contribute to the evolution of theater
in Los Angeles, to broaden and strengthen
the audience for our work, and to
inspire Los Angeles theater artists
to create innovative and exciting
pieces that are unique to the theatrical
experience and push the boundaries
of what is possible.

DESIRE
UNDER THE ELMS
Now
considered a classic of 20th-century
American drama, DESIRE scandalized
early audiences for its treatment
of infanticide, alcoholism, vengeance,
and incest. The very first Los Angeles
cast was arrested for performing
an obscene work! This exciting new
revival is directed by Jeffrey Hayden
and features Charlie Robinson and
Dig Wayne of last year's multiple
award-winning production of August
Wilson's FENCES. Originally adapted
by O'Neill from the Greek classic,
Euripides HIPPOLYTA and Racine's
PHEDERE, Hayden's new take with an
all-African-American cast is sure
to be a Los Angeles event.

NOW
FESTIVAL
2007
Program Three
The 4th annual NOW Festival encourages
risk and invention to foster new and
hybrid performance works. Artists from
Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tijuana
approach the stage with investigative
vision and an interdisciplinary spirit,
bending traditions to generate inspiring
new experimental dance, theater and music.
Monica
Howe will be preforming in Kelly
Marie Martin and
David Jones: Contraption Spell
Known to fans as Kelly and David, these
interdisciplinary artists fuse music-theater,
performance art and "baroque blues" with
scenic design that is artfully artificial
and wistfully hand-made. This modern
American folk opera weaves soaring harmonies,
frenzied movement and melancholy song
into a wry tale of cursed nomads in search
of the source of their possession.
"These two have learned the devilishly
subtle art of listening to each other … well-wrought
folk music is still standing thanks to
Kelly and David." Performer Magazine
