BICYCLE
FILM FESTIVAL 2007 The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates
the bicycle. We are into all styles of
bikes and biking. If you can name it-Tall
Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats,
Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Cycling to
Recumbents- we've probably either ridden
or screened it. What better way to celebrate
these lifestyles than through art, film,
music and performance? We bring together
all aspects of bicycling together to
advocate its ability to transport us
in many ways. Ultimately the Fest is
about having a good time.
We have been fortunate enough to include
works of established artists such as
Jorgen Leth, Mike Mills, Jonas Mekas,
Blonde Redhead, Swoon and Michel Gondry
among others as part of our programming.
Many of the artists who have participated
in the Bike Film Fest such as Nick Golebiewski,
the Neistat Brothers and Lucas Brunelle
are gaining more and more re-cognition
for their work. For more info visit www.bicyclefilmfestival.com

AYAMYE Millions of rural Ghanaians suffer from
a critical lack of reliable, affordable
transport. Walking miles through the
heat or spending 50% of their income
on carfare has crippled many communities.
The rural way of life is in crisis as
many people leave their villages in hopes
of better options in the capital city
of Accra. When sustainable transportation
is introduced it becomes a tool of development,
enabling people to generate and save
money. Education, health care and jobs
become accessible without having to leave
permanently.
Ayamye* begins in Boston where volunteers
work for two days loading a container
with donated used bikes and parts. Through
skillful packing, 450 bikes are loaded
and the container is sent to Ghana, West
Africa. The majority of the bikes are
sold in a colorful frenzy to pay for
shipping costs, while the best bikes
are set aside to take to a rural community
with limited transportation options.
Nurse Letitia struggles to master riding
a bike, so that she can administer vaccinations
in neighboring communities. A bike is
loaned to her by a friend and she is
determined to learn, training for hours
in the middle of the biggest rainstorm
of the decade. “I will learn, I
know I can learn,” she says as
she maneuvers the bike through mud. Her
enthusiasm is so pervasive another nurse
declares, “Nurse Letitia will teach
me to ride also!”
Seth, too poor to afford secondary school,
works on a poultry farm almost every
day of the year. The poultry farm is
located far from his village and friends.
Through The Village Bicycle Project he
receives a bicycle. With his bike he
saves time in commuting – allowing
him to contribute to the growth of the
Youth Drama Group – reaching out
to the Ghanaian youth with plays about
HIV/Aids, Malaria and family planning.
A year later the film catches up with
the community to see if the bikes are
still maintained and how the long term
effect of mobility has improved their
situation in life, and in turn the development
of the village.
Ayamye* celebrates the energy of
the community and proves that
sustainable
solutions to crisis are not always
complex. Goodness, kindness
and bounty can go
far to empower not just individuals
but entire villages.

TOO HOT NOT TO HANDLE
Heat waves. Melting glaciers. Rising
sea levels. Catastrophic storms. Migrating
viruses. Population displacement. Over
the past 100 years, the mass consumption
of fossil fuels, especially in America,
has contributed to a dangerous warming
of the earth that has adversely impacted
the way we live. The cautionary documentary
TOO HOT NOT TO HANDLE offers a guide
to the effects of global warming in the
United States.

HOMELAND - Four Portraits
of Native Action
Having brutally occupied the homeland
of Native Americans, the invading Europeans
forced the indigenous population onto
reservations - land that was specifically
selected because of its apparent worthlessness.
To add salt to wounds that are still
open, multinational energy companies
and others are coming back to extract
the hidden mineral wealth of the reservations,
and are leaving a trail of toxins that,
if unchecked, will make the land unlivable
for centuries to come.
But Native American activists are fighting
back, and their inspirational stories
are chronicled in "HOMELAND: Four
Portraits of Native Action" against
the backdrop of some of the country's
most spectacular landscapes.

THE
POWER OF COMMUNITY - How Cuba
Survived Peak Oil
When
the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990,
Cuba's economy
went into a tailspin. With imports
of oil cut by more than half – and
food by 80 percent – people were
desperate. This film tells of the hardships
and struggles as well as the community
and creativity of the Cuban people
during this difficult time. Cubans
share how they transitioned from a
highly mechanized, industrial agricultural
system to one using organic methods
of farming and local, urban gardens.
It is an unusual look into the Cuban
culture during this economic crisis,
which they call "The Special Period." The
film opens with a short history of
Peak Oil, a term for the time in our
history when world oil production will
reach its all-time peak and begin to
decline forever. Cuba, the only country
that has faced such a crisis – the
massive reduction of fossil fuels – is
an example of options and hope.

WHO
KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?
It was among the fastest,
most efficient production cars ever
built. It ran on electricity, produced
no emissions
and catapulted American technology
to the forefront of the automotive industry.
The lucky few who drove it never wanted
to give it up. So why did General Motors
crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles
in the Arizona desert?
WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? chronicles
the life and mysterious death of the
GM EV1, examining its cultural and economic
ripple effects and how they reverberated
through the halls of government and big
business...

INVISIBLE
CHILDREN
This
is a must see for everyone!
I was so moved by this documentary,
I was so shocked and I was
so touched by it, that I
have to recommend it! This
documentary was shot by 3
guys from USC. They went
to Africa to film something.
They didn't know what they
were going to document, so
they were open to any story
that came their way. And
one night they discovered
what they were looking for.
INVISIBLE CHILDREN is going
to grip you, inspire you,
make you laugh, and make
you cry. These three guys'
lives have been changed forever and
they are now on a mission.
See the trailer, see the
movie, see Africa!
Be inspired!

CONTESTED
STREETS
CONTESTED
STREETS explores the
history and culture
of New York City streets
from pre-automobile
times to the present.
This examination allows
for an understanding
of how the city - though
the most well served
by mass transit in
the United States -
has slowly relinquished
what was a rich, multi-dimensional
conception of the street
as public space to
a mindset that prioritizes
the rapid movement
of cars and trucks
over all other functions.

AN
INCONVENIENT TRUTH
This is
a movie that every person
on this planet should see!
This
movie is very poignant, touching,
engaging, and moving. It
is a smart movie, that will
hopefully
hit some spots and change
us as a nation and us individuals. Right
now this movie is only playing at
selected Theaters, but maybe it's
demand will grow, and more Theaters
will pick it up. Buy
the movie, and screen it alongside
the freeway on a big building, where
commuters could see it. Or screen
it on a building wall from a rooftop,
so passer-by's and cars at red lights
can be entertained. Be inventive!
Screen it where it's least expected.
Where it's most exposed!
