EDGEFEST AND BICYCLE
FILM FESTIVAL RIDE
"Voices
From ChOrnobyl"
June 30th, 11:30 am
It's going to be a busy weekend with the EdgeFest and the The Bicycle Film Festival and the HelMel Block Party at the Bicycle Kitchen.
The Bicycle Film Festival is this week from June 28th through July 1st in Hollywood at the Vine Theatre.
The EdgeFest is on June 30th from 12 noon to 12 midnight in Downtown L.A. at the Regent Theatre.
The HelMel Block Party is on July 1st from 12 noon to 8 pm at Heliotrope Drive at Melrose Avenue in East Hollywood.
Join us for a ride on Saturday to both the EdgeFest and the Bicycle Film Festival.
We are riding to the EdgeFest on
Saturday at 11:30 am from Hollywood to
Downtown. We are meeting at the Hollywood
and Western Red Line Station to see my
play "Voices
From Chornobyl" in the early afternoon.
Tickets are $12 for the entire day and
they have an open bar.
At around 3 pm we will be heading back
to Hollywood to the Bicycle
Film Festival where we'll stay until
they kick us out.
Tickets are $8 per screening (and pst!
You can bring your own bar :-) )
(Taken
from interviews of the Belarussians
in 1996, VOICES follows inhabitants
of the Zone as they struggle
to understand Radiation. "Voices
From Chornobyl" will
be performing at the EdgeFest on
Saturday, June 30th. (Yes, it
is spelled with an "o" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chornobyl),
it wasn't a mistake.) The original
book was written by Svetlana
Alexievich and translated
into English in 1999. Cindy
Marie Jenkins adapted it
and had the first reading at
the Fountain
Theatre, Hollywood, in 2005 and
then the first stage performance
at the
Open Fist Theatre, Hollywood
in 2006. And now it's going to
be at the EdgeFest.
If you are interested in reading
up on it, follow the BBC
link. Fascinating a scary!)
Please,
RSVP at 323.697.7601 so I know how
many spoke cards
I should make.

BICYCLE
BITCHEN
I walked into the Bicycle Kitchen
on a weekday evening, not realizing
that it was Monday. The music
was on, and a half dozen women
or so were wearing kitchen aprons.
But instead of pasta sauce and
chocolate, they were wearing
grease, oil and dirt stains on
their
aprons and on their bare arms.
They had wrenches, bike chains
and brake cables in their hands,
and they were puting bicycles
together, some out of scratch,
and some were just fixing up
their old fixies, and cruisers.
This
looks like fun! It turned out,
that it was Monday night, Bicycle
Bitchen night. At
the Kitchen you can make your own
bike out of donated bike parts. You
can also fix up your old bike, that
you haven't used for years. A complete
bike can cost as little as $100. The
Kitchen is operated by volunteers,
and you can walk in any time and
you will always be greated by the
nicest people. Most of them are soft
spoken. Some of them are hardcore
environmentalists, some of them ride
their bikes because it's more convenient
than driving, and some of them
just enjoy the sense of community.
And they all share a common passion:
they love to ride! Monday
nights are special, in a sense, that
it's for women only, hence the name
Bicycle Bitchen. There is nothing
to prove. It's only you, your bicycle,
and good music! Ladies are encouraged
of all skill levels to learn
bike mechanics and maintenance in
a comfortable
atmosphere. Go and experience
the satisfaction and joy of building,
fixing or souping up your own bike
with a group of women who love bicycling.

WHEELMEN
We
joined the L.A. Wheelmen in January
on their Janus Sequential Century
ride. It was a two day event starting
in Thousand Oaks, with 102 miles
riding each day and we braved the
first day. This was my first century
ride. We got on our bikes at 7:30
a.m. and we started on our first
hill climb. It was a beautiful
day! The sun was out, no wind,
clear skies and I had a new windbreaker
on which kept me warm. We rode
up hill steady through Ojai and
it was wonderful to see all the
small little farms. Seeing where
my daily fruit and vegetables come
from made me really appreciate
the hard work that these farmers
do day-in and day-out. We rode
past huge orchards and ranches,
even a couple of oil-diggers...

LOS
ANGELES CRITICAL MASS
The last Friday of every month in over 100 cities around the world, cyclists,
roller bladers, boarders, etc...come together for a festive rolling celebration.
It's an organized coincidence with no leaders and no set agenda. People come
together for many reasons, to assert their right to cleaner air, less congestion,
safer roads, and to celebrate and ride in solidarity with other cyclists and
like minded individuals. Celebrate this month with Critical Mass!

MIDNIGHT
RIDAZZ
If
you haven't riden the Ridazz rides
than I beg you to move on, turn
around and go back to where you
came from. This ride is dangerous,
it's addictive, it's after effects
are not to be taken lightly. If
you have ridden it, then it's already
too late for you. You have given
in, you have fallen victim to,
you are already a cycling junkie,
you can't be helped. You would
need some serious therapy, and
probably a lot of heavy medication
to cure you of this disease of
riding your bike around town with
hundreds of cyclists.
The
L.A. Alternative has a wonderful
article about not only the Midnight
Ridazz ride but also about who the
Ridazz are, what it means to be riding
in L.A. and how to get involved with
this community... www.laalternative.com

ongoing effort to educate mountain bicyclists as to the appropriate use of the
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area backcountry trails.
Mountain biking is a lot like tennis or skiing. Just a few minor adjustments
in technique can make a huge difference in your control and proficiency. If you
want to get better faster, you need to know the fundamentals of mountain biking
technique. Whether you're just getting into mountain biking or have been riding
for years, you'll learn some valuable tips from our Introduction to Mountain
Biking skills class that is offered each month.
